Why does a listener’s location look wrong?

From time to time, you might see that someone has listened to your music from a location that doesn’t seem right.

In almost every case, this is due to how the internet tracks location—using IP addresses.

What’s an IP address?

Think of it like your "return address" on the internet. It helps platforms like ours make a best guess at where a user is located.

Why isn’t it always accurate?

An IP address can give a rough idea of location, but it’s often not exact. That’s because it usually points to the location of the internet provider’s equipment—not the actual person. For example, someone using mobile data or a company network might show up as being in a different city—or even country. It’s a bit like caller ID showing a company’s switchboard instead of the person calling.
